Where do you want to go?

I’ve written before about New Year’s Resolutions. For some reason my brain is wired to set goals and create plans. I find it sort of entertaining.

That’s not to say I follow through on every plan. Far from it. Many are just temporary structures like a pop-up tent. In most cases my level of commitment is very low. The goal is a nice idea but may have the permanence of a soap bubble. It comes to me easily and gets discarded with the same ease.

This morning I read a post in my Facebook group. Some folks were discussing goals and feeling somewhat disengaged in the whole process. One person added, “Hell, I don’t even know where I want to go!”

That got me thinking– What gets in the way of having a goal? What makes it hard to even dream?

One reason might be not believing you have the option. Circumstances may make life seem out of your control. Maybe you’re so caught up in caring for others that thinking about alternatives seems disloyal or impossible.

Or maybe you have a belief that it’s wrong to fantasize about unrealistic possibilities and unless something is grounded in reality you’re fooling yourself.

Another reason you might discount your ambition is you it needs to be a grand passion with a strong driving force. Elizabeth Gilbert speaks to this is a video I found valuable entitled, Flight of the Hummingbird: The Curiosity-Driven Life.

Here are some questions that may help you uncover some elusive goals:

  • What do you want to learn?
  • What experiences do you want more of?
    • What were the qualities of those experiences that made them exceptional, special, memorable, desirable?
    • What are some other situations/times in your life that had a similar quality?
  • What might be a step toward more of what you want, or a step beyond what you’ve already had to something even greater?

I invite anyone who wants support clarifying goals or dreaming big to email me and set up a conversation. Remember, I find this entertaining. You’d be doing me a service.

Happy New Year.
